Woodworking drill bits typically feature a prominent guide tip or center locator for accurate initial positioning during drilling, preventing slippage on the wood surface. Some types (such as twist drills or flat drills) also incorporate an outer cutting edge to cut the wood fibers first, followed by enlarging the hole with the main cutting edge, resulting in a smoother hole wall.

 

The spiral flutes on woodworking drill bits are usually deep and wide, facilitating rapid sawdust removal and preventing clogging and overheating. Poor sawdust removal not only reduces drilling efficiency but can also cause the drill bit to overheat and scorch the wood surface.

 

Woodworking drill bits are generally made of high-carbon steel or high-speed steel (HSS), with some high-end products featuring surface coatings to enhance wear resistance. Because wood is relatively soft, the requirements for the drill bit's cutting edge are not as extreme as in metalworking, but it still needs to remain sharp to minimize tearing.

 

Woodworking drill bits also emphasize smooth cutting and hole quality. Compared to metal drill bits, they prioritize minimizing wood fiber tearing, resulting in cleaner hole edges, making them suitable for furniture making, interior installation, and structural drilling.
