High-carbon steel is one of the most common materials for woodworking drill bits, characterized by low cost and good machinability, making it suitable for ordinary wood and general household use. Its cutting edge is sharp, resulting in high efficiency in cutting wood, but its wear resistance and high-temperature resistance are relatively average, and it dulls easily after prolonged use.
High-speed steel (HSS) woodworking drill bits offer better hardness and heat resistance. Even at higher speeds, they maintain stable cutting ability, making them suitable for continuous operation or machining harder woods. Some HSS drill bits also incorporate cobalt or undergo surface coating treatments to further improve wear resistance and lifespan.
For high-strength or professional-grade woodworking drill bits, alloy steel or carbide tip structures may be used. These drill bits have even higher hardness and stronger wear resistance, and can be used for machining composite boards, hardwoods, and even nailed wood. However, due to the higher hardness of the material, its toughness is relatively low, making it more sensitive to impacts and improper handling.
In addition, some woodworking drill bits are treated with titanium coating, blackening, or plating to reduce friction, improve rust resistance, and extend their lifespan.
