Cleaning Methods For Woodworking Drill Bits

Apr 14, 2026

Woodworking drill bits easily accumulate sawdust, resin, and dust after use. If not cleaned promptly, this can affect cutting efficiency and accelerate corrosion, thus requiring regular maintenance and cleaning.

After each use, promptly remove sawdust and dust from the drill bit surface. Use a brush, soft cloth, or compressed air to clean the auger grooves and cutting edges, focusing on removing accumulated debris from the grooves to prevent long-term buildup from affecting chip removal performance.

If resin, glue, or burnt residue adheres to the drill bit surface, wipe it with alcohol, a specialized cleaner, or a small amount of rosin cleaner. For stubborn deposits, soak for a few minutes first, then gently brush away with a soft brush. Do not use a hard steel brush, as this may damage the cutting edge.

After cleaning, thoroughly dry the drill bit to prevent moisture residue from causing rust. For high-speed steel or carbon steel drill bits, it is recommended to apply a thin layer of anti-rust oil to the surface to improve oxidation resistance, especially important when stored in humid environments.
